MacRae & Whitley, LLP is a law firm located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. This firm and its predecessors have practiced law in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, and across North Carolina for over 100 years.

James C. MacRae, Jr. began working with the firm in 1989. Jim is licensed to practice in all state courts as well as all United States District Courts in North Carolina, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and U.S. Supreme Court. He graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1983 and from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1988. He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Cumberland County, North Carolina in 1988 and 1989. He is presently a member of the North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, Cumberland County Bar Association, and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.

Jim was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in August of 1960. He grew up in Fayetteville and graduated from Terry Sanford High School in 1979. He has been a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church since 1961. When he is not working, he enjoys outdoor activities, music and spending time with his friends and family, which includes his wife and their two children.

Jim’s practice focuses on all aspects of personal injury law to include motorcycle, trucking and automobile accidents, explosions, and other injuries.  He is also experienced in criminal law, school assaults and neglect, wrongful death, work place injuries, condemnation and eminent domain, and civil litigation.

Gregory T. Whitley joined the firm in 2008.He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Political Science. He then graduated from Campbell University School of Law in 2008. While at Campbell, Greg was a member of the Campbell Law Review. Greg is currently a member of the North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, Cumberland County Bar Association and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. Greg is licensed to practice in North Carolina State Courts, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and various North Carolina regulatory and administrative boards.

Greg’s practice focuses in the areas of injury and wrongful death, school abuse and neglect, condemnation/eminent domain, insurance coverage disputes, and business transactions, litigation and employment issues.

Greg devotes a great deal of his time giving back and helping to enrich our community.  He serves on boards for a number of nonprofits in Fayetteville as well as boards for Fayetteville Technical Community College and Methodist University.

Greg is a member of Haymount United Methodist Church in Fayetteville and spends his free time enjoying the great outdoors with friends and family.

James C. MacRae III started working with the firm in 2024. Before joining the firm, Jim graduated from East Carolina University in 2018, with a Bachelor of Arts in Business. He then graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2022. After being licensed, Jim worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Cumberland County, North Carolina. He is currently a member of the North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, Cumberland County Bar Association and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. Jim is licensed to practice in North Carolina State Courts and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Jim’s practice focuses on land condemnation/eminent domain to include litigation of DOT, utility, and gas line easements, all aspects of criminal defense including DWI and other traffic related issues, and litigation involving injuries, wrongful death, and premise liability.

Jim was born and raised right outside of Fayetteville, North Carolina in the Gray’s Creek area right along the banks of the Cape Fear River. He is a generational member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and enjoys all things outdoors. He is excited to be serving the community that he calls home.
